The configuration editor in Synergy

Tracey Kenny,
IT Manager, Poplars Surgery, Birmingham

The configuration editor is where ‘global' changes are made – in other words, settings or data that affect everyone. It is also where changes are made to the hardware setup, both centrally and at individual workstations

The configuration editor is where the practice details are held. At our practice we have recently changed our telephone numbers, and this is where amendments to like this are made. Logging in and password details, medication review dates , Transferring patients between GPs, adding printers, script information, the Read code Editor and Hooks Editor are all accessed though the Configuration Editor.

Because it makes global changes to the system, great care needs to be taken when working in Configuration Editor. You need to have permission to access Configuration Editor: whether you have this depends on the Staff Role you were assigned when added as a user. It is very important to consider this when assigning Staff Roles: ideally only a few people should have access to Configuration Editor so as to protect its important data and settings. (We will talk about adding new users via the Configuration Editor later on.)

Start the Configuration Editor from the menu bar of your main Synergy screen by clicking on Utilities/Configuration Editor.

You are now presented with the Wizard screen. This is optional: you can select not to show this on start up if required (from a setting within the Configuration Editor, of course…!).

The Wizard screen allows you to select a Wizard enabling you to add a User, Printer or Workstation easily. However, if you select Advanced instead, the main configuration window opens. Note that it has seven tabs as well as the menu bar, and three icons:

The menu bar

Under File on the menu bar you will find Software Licence Administration, Practice details, Remove Drug Lock, Remove Record Lock and Exit (to close just the Configuration Editor).

The Options menu is where you can select whether you prefer on-screen confirmation when saving, closing and deleting after making amendments in the Configuration Editor.

Next are the Editors menu (for the Hooks Editor and the Read code Editor ) and then the Help files.
