Setting
up mail filters for Outlook and Outlook Express
The following
was constructed for Outlook 2002 and Outlook Express 6. As far as I know
there are only minor differences from earlier versions, but please accept
my apologies if I am wrong! John

Outlook
- Click
on Tools then Rules Wizard
- Click
on the New button
- Click
on "Check messages when they arrive" and then Next (in Outlook
2002/3 you will need to click "Start from a blank rule")
- Click
the box beside "Sent to people or distribution list"
- Click
the words "people or distribution list" in the lower box and
type in the appropriate address (see list below)
- Click
Next
- Click
the box beside "Move it to the specified folder"
- Click
the word "specified" in the lower box
- Choose
one of your folders or click the New button to create a new folder.
When you have selected the appropriate folder click OK
- It is advisable also to
click the "stop processing more rules" box to avoid some of
Outlook's nastier habits!
- Click
Next twice
- Type
in a name for your rule, or leave the default name, then click Finish
Another neat trick is to
group emails by topic within the folder, then if a topic doesn't interest
you, delete it in bulk. It's dead easy! Just right-click anywhere in the
list of emails in the folder and select Customize current view. Click
on "Group by", and in the top drop-down box select Conversation.
Then click OK twice.
Outlook
Express
- Click
on Tools, then Message Rules, then Mail
- Click
on the New button
- In
section 1 click in the box beside "Where the To or CC line contains
people"
- In
section 2 click in the box beside "Move it to the specified folder"
- In
section 3 click on the words "contains people" and type in
the appropriate address (see list below), then the Add button, then
the OK button
- Still
in section 3 click on the word "specified" and select the
folder you want, or click the New folder button. When you have selected
the appropriate folder click OK.
- In
section 4 type a suitable name for the rule and click OK. Click OK again.
